LeBallister’s started in 1947 with Hendrickson’s grandfather George LeBallister. Now, you can find three generations working at this family-run business. LeBallister’s supplies seed and fertilizer to the agricultural industry, creating onsite custom mixes and also offering consulting services to benefit from their years of experience.

This place is a GEM! I used to buy all my cover crop seed and fertilizers online due to inadequate big box store selections. Now I have my one stop shop for covers and they have a huge selection of organic and synthetic fertilizers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much seed do I need?

Small seeds such as wildflowers, clovers & mustard – 1 lb per 3,000 square feet or 15 lbs per acre.

Erosion control grasses, including native grasses – 1 – 1 ½ lbs per 1,000 square feet or 40 lbs per acre.

Turf (lawn) grasses – 10 lbs per 1,000 square feet or 400 lbs per acre.

Large seeds such as plowdown cover crops, barley & oats  – 2 1/2 lbs per 1,000 square feet or 100 lbs per acre.

Which seed “comes back”?

Traditional plowdown mixes are typically mowed or turned under prior to going to seed and will not come back for subsequent years.

Otherwise, both annual and perennial plants may come back year after year. Annual plants regenerate by scattering their seeds at the end of the season and will new plants will sprout in the fall when the rains get things going. Perennial plants don’t die after one year but may go dormant during the summer without irrigation.

Do you deliver?

Local delivery is available for large quantities (minimum of 1 ton). Charges vary depending on quantity, location, etc. For safety reasons, we may decline delivery where the roads are unpaved or we deem the location to be unsafe or too remote. Customers do need to be prepared to unload pallets from our flatbed trucks.

For large quantities out of the area, we would be happy to work with you to coordinate with a freight company for shipment to a business address. We cannot coordinate deliveries to residential locations.

How will this seed work in another climate?

We are a small local company located in Northern California. We are not prepared to advise how our products will do in climates that vary from ours. Local universities often have extension services with good information, or a local master gardener may be able to advise you.

When is the best time to plant?

In our region, fall is the ideal time to plant most all seed. Lawn seed may also be planted in the spring with irrigation.
